WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY SHIELD?

The new Premier League season hasn't even started yet, managers are still figuring out their teams, and some players are returning from their extended summer breaks due to the World Cup.
In other words, it's serious enough that everyone wants to win, but relaxed enough that nobody is treating it like the biggest game of the year.
SO…DOES THIS ACTUALLY MATTER?
For fans, it's fantastic. The Community Shield is the traditional season opener to the English football season, giving supporters their first chance to see their team in a competitive game after the summer.
More importantly, it signals the return of competitive football. After weeks of transfer news, preseason exhibition games what Brits call 'friendlies' and speculation, this is the moment when football finally starts to feel real again.
Nobody is going to tell you that winning the Community Shield is as important as winning the Premier League or FA Cup. It isn't. Managers often use the game to give new players their first meaningful minutes, experiment with tactics, and build fitness before the real season begins.
Does winning it mean you're going to win the Premier League? Absolutely not. Does losing it mean your season is already doomed? Also no.
Will supporters spend 90 minutes acting like it's incredibly important and then call it 'only the Community Shield' if they lose? Almost certainly.
But there is still a trophy to win. Nobody wants to start the season by losing a final especially to a major rival. The Community Shield brings bragging rights, history, a trophy and an early glimpse of how a team might look during the season ahead.

THE 30-SECOND HISTORY LESSON
The competition is more than 100 years old. The first Community Shield was played in 1908, although the competition has changed names and formats throughout its history. It originally began as the Charity Shield, with the game helping to raise money for charitable causes.
The modern format - the Premier League champions playing the FA Cup winners - became established in 1921 and still raises money for charity to this day.
